Vote against a 3rd runway – because Munich shall remain worth living in.

Say no to higher, faster, farther forever – two runways are enough.

The two existing runways will continue to bring everybody to their destination in future. Munich airport has the capacity for 500.000 flights and more. In 2011 it took 409.956 take-offs and landings. Then, compared to 2011 air activity decreased by 2 per cent during the first three months of 2012. Thus, there is enough spare capacity – provided, demand will increase at all.

Aircraft noise is pathogenic.

Today about 540.000 people in the districts of Freising, Erding, Dachau and Munich are already affected by aircraft noise. In addition large parts of Munich would suffer from aircraft noise, as well, when flight paths will be changed because of the 3rd runway. This we want to prevent. For, aircraft noise and exhaust fumes are sickening.

Save precious countryside outside our door.

Hardly any German state paves over more ground annually than Bavaria does. With the 3rd runway a larger surface would be spent than lake Tegernsee covers. The Erdinger Moos remaining wetlands would be destroyed which now harbour rare animal and plant species including 1,000 hectares of bird sanctuary.

Invest taxes wisely.

The 3rd runway will cost 1.25 billion euros – not including customary cost explosions known from public works. The airport company Flughafen München GmbH already has debts of 2.7 billion. Finally, hundreds of millions of taxes will end in smoke, money which is missing elsewhere e.g. education or railway development.

Keep Munich livable.

Munich continues booming. Prosperity goes up. But there is a dark side: Scarce housing space, increased cost of living, unavailable child care and overcrowded traffic routes threaten our quality of life. The social balance is wavering. Let us favour the development of an efficient and ecologically justifiable infrastructure for everybody instead of a 3rd runway which serves few people. For, our „metropolis with a heart“ does not need a 3rd runway.

And how about climate change and escalating costs of aviation fuel with crude oil running out eventually?
How will our children and grandchildren react?

So, on June 17 vote against a 3rd runway. Or cast a postal vote now.

How to tick three boxes (ballot paper specimen):

Unfortunately the municipal council of Munich (with its party members of SPD, CSU and FDP who support a 3rd runway) has decided to present its own referendum covering the same issue. So, the ballot is a bit complicated:

„Bürgerentscheid 1“: Question of runway supporters.
„Bürgerentscheid 2“: Question of runway opponents.
„Stichfrage“: Tie-break question to know if you are for or against the 3rd runway.

And this is the relevant „Bürgerentscheid 2 / Bürgerbegehren“ question phrase:

„Do you vote for capital Munich to use every influence possible in its capacity as a partner of Flughafen München GmbH to prevent construction of a 3rd runway at Munich airport and especially to not approve of a board decision for a 3rd runway in the partner’s meeting of Flughafen München GmbH?“
